Picture this: it’s Friday night, and the temptation of a greasy takeaway is calling your name. But if you’re a member of the heartburn club, you know that a few minutes of indulging might lead to hours of discomfort. It’s a tough call to make, and sometimes the pain feels worth it for that one slice! But did you know that there are some natural remedies that can really help to relieve that heartburn once it hits?
The extent to which these adjustments will ease your heartburn depends on your symptoms. Occasional heartburn can often be managed through diet alone and by adopting these tips. But if you’re dealing with frequent heartburn, you might have GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease), and in that case, supplementing with our 120 day Heartburn Relief Kit is the best way to resolve it for good.
Let’s have a look at 5 natural home remedies our clients have had success with!
Portion Control
Ever feel like your eyes are bigger than your stomach?! This tends to happen when you haven’t eaten all day and suddenly hunger strikes hard! But those heavy meals really don’t help with your digestion. Eating smaller, regular meals throughout the day can make a massive difference. This approach lightens the load on your digestive system, making it easier to break down food. It also prevents your stomach from overfilling, opening the LES (lower esophageal sphincter muscle) and pushing acid into your esophagus, which is a common cause of heartburn.
Identifying Trigger Foods
Every heartburn sufferer has a unique set of trigger foods, so when clients come to us for dietary advice it’s impossible to give a generalized answer that applies to everyone. But there are some common culprits. These include coffee, fried and spicy foods, fizzy drinks, peppermint, alcohol, chocolate, citrus fruits, and caffeine. These foods tend to relax the Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES), allowing acid to escape.
We recommend keeping a food diary to identify your personal triggers and gradually reduce your intake to see how you respond. Many of our clients on the Heartburn Relief Kit do this at the start and then add these foods back in once their acid levels are stabilized and symptoms are under control.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar (ACV) has definitely gained a reputation as a home remedy for various ailments, including heartburn. Some people find relief by diluting a tablespoon of ACV in a glass of water and drinking it before meals. This makes sense because we know that the acid reflux that causes heartburn is commonly due to low stomach acid, so increasing acidity helps to alleviate it. The only issue with this is “how” you get your ACV. Drinking it straight isn’t always the best option as it is acidic and can be erosive on the esophagus especially if you have pre-existing damage. Our ACV Gummies are a much safer option to increase your acidity and they taste a lot better too!
Aloe Vera
Aloe vera is one of the key ingredients in our Acid Relief supplement and for good reason its anti-inflammatory properties can help to soothe the esophagus and alleviate the discomfort of heartburn. In fact, many of our clients also drink aloe vera juice alongside our supplements to help with managing their symptoms. Just be sure to choose pure aloe vera juice without added sugars or artificial additives for the best results.
Chamomile Tea
Chamomile really is the go-to comfort tea for everything isn’t it? Nausea, check. Cold and flu, check. And heartburn, check! It’s no surprise that, due to its calming and anti-inflammatory properties, Chamomile can really help with soothing irritation in the digestive tract. It can also help to reduce stress and anxiety that can often contribute to digestive discomfort and acid reflux.
Whilst there are many different varieties of Chamomile like Roman, English, and Egyptian; the one most often used for making medicinal tea is German chamomile. In fact we included German Chamomile in our Acid Relief supplement formulation due to its anti-inflammatory properties.
