I used to think gastritis and heartburn were pretty much the same thing! So whenever I felt that familiar burning stomach pain I’d just pop a TUMs and get on with my day. If you’re in the same boat, you’re not alone. Many people get confused by these conditions because the symptoms of gastritis and heartburn are just so similar. However they ARE different and it’s important to identify exactly which condition you’re dealing with so that you know how to best treat it.

Heartburn is an inflammation of your esophageal lining

Heartburn is a common symptom of acid reflux and it’s caused by acid refluxing back up into your esophagus. And here’s where we dig a little deeper into the analogy side of things! There’s a sphincter where your esophagus meets your stomach and we call this the lower esophagael sphincter muscle (LES). This opens and closes to allow for food to enter your stomach and also stop your stomach contents (food particles and acid) from refluxing back up.

However, sometimes the LES stops functioning properly and this is often due to insufficient levels of stomach acid. Yep, low stomach acid! You can read more about this and how to get natural heartburn relief in our previous blog post. When the LES stops fully closing, you will start to suffer from acid reflux which then leads to irritation of the lining of the esophagus. And guess what this irritation is called? Yep, you got it – Heartburn!

Symptoms of heartburn include:

  • Burning in your throat
  • Tightening sensation in your chest
  • Sharp chest pain
  • Chronic cough

Gastritis is an inflammation of your stomach lining

It is possible to have both heartburn and gastritis at once (if you’re unlucky!) but you can also have these conditions separately. Gastritis is an inflammation of the mucous lining in your stomach. This can be caused by a bunch of things such as medications (mainly NSAIDs) and aging, but one of the most common culprits is a bacteria called H.Pylori that attacks the stomach lining.

Symptoms of gastritis include:

  • Indigestion
  • Nausea
  • Bloating
  • Belching
  • Diarrhea
  • Stomach pain
