Do You Need to Clean Your Colon?

Want to learn more?

If symptoms such as fatigue, bloating, and constipation have become “the norm” for you then it could be time to clean your colon. By cleansing your colon from the inside out you can remove any of the nasty waste buildup that can lead to even more health concerns such as acne, depression, arthritis, and weight gain. The colon cleanse is a practice that has been around as far back as the Ancient Greeks and it started to become popular in the US in the early/mid 1900s thanks to just how beneficial it can be in improving your overall gut health and well-being.

Don’t Panic: You Don’t Need Colonic Irrigation

This was the first thing you thought of when you heard “colon cleansing” wasn’t it? But colonic irrigation really isn’t necessary to flush these toxins out of your system and there are lots of natural methods which I’m going to run through here.

Increase Your Water Intake

Everyone knows that they should be drinking more water, because most people just don’t drink enough! For a colon cleanse, it’s recommended that you drink about 8 glasses of lukewarm water a day and eat lots of high water content foods such as celery, lettuce, and watermelons.

Try Saltwater

The “saltwater flush” is great for people who suffer from irregular bowel movements. You’ll need to mix 2 tsp of sea salt in lukewarm water first thing in the morning before breakfast and in the evening before dinner. Make sure to drink it quickly before eating, then give it a few minutes and you’ll probably be running to the bathroom (so make sure you have one nearby).

Increase the Fiber in Your Diet

Fibrous plants containing cellulose will help to bulk up that waste that’s hanging out in your colon and get it moving. High-fiber foods are also super beneficial for maintaining a balanced gut flora.

Start Taking Probiotics

Ideally, everyone should be taking a daily probiotic for optimal overall health, but if you want to cleanse your colon then you should DEFINITELY be taking one. You also can increase your probiotic intake with foods such as kimchi, yogurt, miso, sourdough bread, and pickles. This will add good bacteria into your gut to reduce inflammation and encourage regular bowel movements.

Get Juicing

We’re not fans of faddy diets but juicing can be good for you in moderation and really help with digestion and bowel regularity. A 2015 study showed that Vitamin C can help to detoxify the colon and this is a primary component of most juice blends. Smoothies are another great option as they still contain the skins and pulp of the fruits so contain more fiber which is great for your colon. You don’t need to go on a full-on juice cleanse diet, just add a juice or smoothie to your diet each day.
